How is the pure tone audiometry test done?
Pure tone testing (audiogram), For this test, you wear earphones attached to the audiometer. Pure tones of a specific frequency and volume are delivered to one ear at a time. You are asked to signal when you hear a sound. The minimum volume required to hear each tone is graphed.
Is the PTA test painful?
All steps of a hearing test are painless. During the hearing test, a series of tones of different frequencies (also known as pitches) will be presented to each ear separately. You will respond to test signals either by a hand raise or pushing a button. This is called a Pure Tone test.
What is a normal PTA?
The most common PTA definition found in epidemiological, or population-based, studies is the four-frequency average of 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz. As the PTA increases, the hearing ability decreases. Normal hearing for speech is observed in adults with PTAs of 25 dB HL or less.
How much does PTA test for ear cost in India?
In India, the price of the pure tone audiometry test ranges from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,500.
How long does a PTA test take?
You are allowed 5 hours for the PT examination and 4 hours for the PTA examination. There are 250 items (questions) on the PT examination and 200 items on the PTA examination.
Why is the PTA test important?
The test is able to detect defects in air conduction (conductive hearing loss) through the use of tones or defects in air and bone conduction (sensorineural hearing loss) through the use of vibrations to help identify the amount and type of hearing loss present.
How long does audiometry last?
The procedure usually takes 5-10 minutes and some patients may experience minor pain.
How do I prepare for the audiometry test?
So in preparation for audiometric testing, also known as a hearing testing, remember to: Have your ears cleared of wax at least 2 days before your hearing test. For 16 hours before your hearing test avoid exposure to loud noise. Try to be free of illness that includes mucus build-up in the middle ear.
