Diwali is the hardest week of the year for anyone who wears a hearing aid. The noise is extreme. The air is full of smoke. A device that works beautifully all year can suddenly feel unbearable.

Why Are Diwali Crackers Risky for Hearing Aid Users?
Because the sound is both very loud and very sudden.
Indian law bans firecrackers louder than 125 dB(AI) at four metres. Joined or series crackers must be quieter still. But sound fades with distance. Stand closer than four metres and you are above even that limit.
One sudden blast can damage hearing on its own. Steady noise usually needs hours to do the same harm.

How Do You Protect Your Hearing Aid During Diwali?
1. Turn the volume down before you step outside
Do this first, not after the first cracker goes off. Most hearing aid apps let you drop the volume in two taps.
2. Switch to a quiet or noise programme
If your audiologist set up a noisy-environment programme, use it. It changes how the device handles sound, not just how loud it is.
3. Take them out near crackers
Within a few metres of the bursting, remove your hearing aids. Put them in their case. Wearing earplugs instead is the simplest way to protect hearing aids from firecrackers.

4. Keep your distance
Four metres is the legal measuring distance. It is not a safe distance.
Watch from a balcony, a doorway, or across the street. Do not stand in the middle.
5. Wipe off smoke and dust every night

Normal hearing aid care matters more this week. Wipe the device with a dry cloth and brush the microphone ports. Never use water or spirit.
6. Use a drying kit all week

7. Store them safely, not loosely
A hearing aid left on a table can be knocked over, stepped on or lost. Use the case or the charger, every time.
Diwali Hearing Protection for an Older Parent
Three things help most.
Set the volume down for them before the evening starts. Many older users will not open the app themselves.
Keep spare earplugs in their pocket, so they are ready when needed.
Agree on a quiet room indoors they can step into. Being able to walk away matters more than any setting.
Children with hearing aids need the same care, usually managed by an adult.
